Dear Parents/Guardians,

It’s hard to believe it is the fourth quarter! The last quarter of the school year is going to be busy; however, our goal is to finish the year stronger than we started! Please take a moment to review the updates below for the end of March. Have a relaxing and enjoyable Spring Recess!

Updates/Upcoming Week

Spring Recess- Schools will not be in session from March 29th- April 5th.

April 8th- Flexible Instruction Day- The district will have a Flexible Instructional Day due to the occurrence of the solar eclipse.  Please review the expectations for Flexible Instructional Days (FID).

Our school building will function on a two-hour delay schedule on Flexible Instructional Days (FID). The schedule and expectations can also be found on the Intermediate School website.

All students will be expected to follow their brick-and-mortar schedule; however, their classes will take place through Google Meet. Students must be prepared to start their instructional day at 9:51 AM, the start of first period. Students will sign into Google Classroom (first period class) at this time and simply click on the Google Meet link provided on the stream page. This will take place for each of their classes throughout the day.

Attendance will be taken each period throughout the day via Skyward. These days will count towards our attendance procedures/policies within the district. Please make sure your child is participating in his/her classes. If there are any issues, contact the teacher via email.

3rd Quarter Report Cards- These items will be posted in Skyward on April 9th by 3:00 p.m.

PSSA Testing - The schools in Pennsylvania are working together to help our children attain healthy development and high academic achievement levels. Because all students will need to achieve a level of proficiency and yearly academic growth on the Pennsylvania Academic Standards, we need to assess and monitor student progress at each grade level from K-12. Because of this, we administer various local, statewide, and standardized achievement tests. Kiski Area Intermediate School will be completing PSSA testing for all 7th and 8th grade students (including virtual students) on the dates listed below.

ELA Testing: April 23, 24, and 25
Math Testing: April 29 and 30
Science Testing (8th grade only): May 1 and 2

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please take a moment to review the updates and noteworthy items below for the week of January 22 - January 26. Have an awesome weekend!

Updates/Upcoming Week

No Name Calling Week - KAIS came together to support and promote “No Name Calling Week” January 15th through the 19th.   KAIS supports bullying prevention and recognized this with a variety of activities including a schoolwide poster contest.  Students showed their creative skills with posters centered around the themes of "Be a Buddy not a Bully" and "Think Before You Speak."  We are pleased to announce our winners: Marie Roberts (8th grade), Angela Beer, Camden Frye, and Madison McDonald (all in 7th grade).

8th Grade STEM - The 8th grade STEM students used the skills they learned from their "Home Alone" project to complete the "If I Built the School" project.  Students brainstormed ideas regarding what they'd like to see in a school if they were in charge of renovations, made a floor plan, and then built 3-D models.  Aaron Shook and Alex Simoni's school was a student favorite because it had a moving elevator using power from a remote control car.  Mrs. Phillips was very pleased with the creativity displayed by all!

Hockey For Heart - 7th and 8th grade students are putting together teams of 11 players to compete in a fundraising event that will take place during the E/I period starting on February 7.  The top two teams in the tournament will play in front of the school during a PM assembly.  Each student will donate $10 to participate in the tournament.  All money raised will be donated to the American Heart Association.  If anyone would like to make a donation but not participate in the event, money or checks can be turned into Mrs. Valenti.  All checks should be made out to the KAIS Activity Fund.

Keyboarding 7 - The following students have achieved a remarkable milestone by earning a perfect score of all three stars on their EduTyping lessons: Rachel Johns, Madison Drum, Nina Holm, Logan McMeans, Cooper Petrilla, and Benjamin Murphy.  Not Pictured: Peytan Mcgarry, Parker May, and Quinn Murphy.

Mr. Skwarko couldn't be prouder of their dedication and commitment to mastering this essential skill. Keyboarding is a valuable skill in today's digital world, and their proficiency in typing will undoubtedly serve them well in the future, both academically and professionally. This achievement is a testament to their hard work and determination.

He also wants to take this opportunity to express how proud he is of all of the students in 7th grade Keyboarding for the second nine weeks.  Each student has put in their best effort to develop their keyboarding skills.  Their progress is a commendable journey towards mastering this skill.  Your children’s dedication and hard work is truly appreciated.

NAEP Testing - National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also referred to as “The Nation's Report Card” will take place on February 1.

The Nation's Report Card is a unique resource because it offers a window into the state of our K-12 education system and what our children are learning. The results provide educators, policymakers, elected officials, and parents across the country with invaluable information regarding how our children are doing compared to other children in large urban districts, other states, and the nation. When our children participate in NAEP, they are helping to inform decisions about how to improve education in their state and in our country. The participation of your child can, and often does, lead to change.

NAEP Testing will only impact a random sample of our 8th grade student body. Students (and families) will be notified if selected by the end of January.

Keyboarding 7 - As we approach the end of the 9 weeks in Keyboarding 7, Mr. Skarko is thrilled to share the remarkable progress the students have made in mastering essential typing skills. He wants to express his sincere pride in each student's dedication and hard work over the past weeks. The strides they have taken in improving their typing proficiency have been truly commendable. Throughout this course, your children have gained crucial skills that extend far beyond the keyboard. As a class, they worked diligently to master each key on the keyboard, allowing them to use their Chromebooks more efficiently. As a result, their typing speed and accuracy have significantly increased. The skills gained in this class will enhance their productivity and prepare them for the future.

Be The Good Club - Club members have been working to spread kindness throughout the Intermediate School.

Students in the club created a Kindness Board that is currently displayed right outside of the cafeteria for all to see with the heading, "Take what you need, give what you can.” Club members have been writing inspirational messages on post-it notes and attaching them to the board. Students are then able to "take what they need" and spread a little positivity and kindness throughout the school. Students are also encouraged to "give what they can" by adding their own inspirational messages to the board.

Be The Good members have also been helping teachers. On Call Help Cards have been created and passed out to faculty and staff so that they can receive help from the members of the club. So far, students have helped teachers clean up Christmas displays, take down/hang posters in the hallways, pass out information to classrooms, and clean out boxes from classrooms. The Be The Good Club is working hard to spread kindness throughout the building, and they are doing a great job!

No Naming-Calling Week, January 15-19 - Students are encouraged to take part in a poster contest, participate in homeroom activities, and always think before they speak.  This is a continuation of our social-emotional learning goals of anti-bullying and treating others with kindness.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Please take a moment to review the updates and noteworthy items below for the week of December 4 - December 8. Have a wonderful week!

Updates/Upcoming Week

STEM Class - Eighth grade students have been working on measurement by enlarging a floor plan of a house.  Once the scale drawings were complete, they added in traps similar to the ones found in the Home Alone movie.  The students did an excellent job on all parts of the project and are looking forward to building in 3D next.  Mrs. Phillips is very proud of the work they put into this project!

World Cultures Door Decorating Contest - Leading up to our World Culture Day, students at KAIS participated in a door decorating contest. The winners were as follows:  Most Authentic-Egypt, Most Creative-Canada & Mexico, Most Informative-Ireland, Bahamas & Norway, Most Inviting- Germany, and Best Design-Iceland. Teachers' choice award went to Costa Rica.

NWCTC Informational Fair - KAIS was pleased to have the NWCTC students and faculty visit us on December 5. Throughout the morning, the eighth grade students had the opportunity to see and learn about all 12 programs offered at the NWCTC. In addition, the school counselors are working with the NWCTC to have interested students tour the NWCTC during school hours one day in January.

Student Council Sharing Holiday Cheer - Eighth grade Student Council member Taylor Keller spearheaded a committee to share holiday cheer with a local nursing home. Students on the committee donated a huge Christmas box overflowing with Christmas crafts including items for making/decorating a Gingerbread House, Christmas trees, cute penguins as well as various holiday crosswords and word searches. Taylor was so busy buzzing around like a bee, there wasn’t time to snap a picture of her; but her time spent volunteering for this heart-warming activity was greatly appreciated.

The Butterfly Project - After reading the short story "The Butterfly," students in ELA 8 completed a Children of the Holocaust research project. They designed a butterfly, researched a child, and used their writing skills to summarize and honor the life of the child. This project served as a culminating activity for Unit #2 before heading into the holiday break.

Holiday Tree & Books - Thanks to Madi Walker, Ruthie Schade, and Lily Champion for finishing the Media Center's holiday tree that was started by Taylor Rich and Marie Roberts. The tree adds a festive flair to the hallway outside the Media Center.

Holiday Assembly - December 20th

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As we return from Thanksgiving Break, the excitement of the Holiday Season can be felt at KAIS. Over the next few weeks, our schedule will be jam packed with winter concerts, sports, clubs, and dress down days. It’s an exciting time of year and we look forward to having fun with our student body throughout the month of December!

Updates/Next Week

Mrs. Doubtfire Field Trip - On Wednesday, November 29, 160 Kiski Area chorus students attended a field trip to Pittsburgh to see the musical Mrs. Doubtfire.  Of those 160 students, 102 of them were from the Intermediate School.  After enjoying dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe in Station Square, the students went to the Benedum Center to see the show.  It was an amazing night!

NWCTC Informational Fair - On Tuesday, December 5, we are excited to have the NWCTC come to KAIS to visit with our 8th grade students.  Our students will have the opportunity to meet NWCTC staff and learn about the 12 programs the NWCTC has to offer.  This will entail high school NWCTC students setting up stations to meet, greet and share their knowledge and enthusiasm about their chosen programs with our students.  Expectations of the NWCTC and the process for applying to the NWCTC will be covered.  Applications are available in our main office for students who express an interest in attending there in 9th grade.

"A latte" Language Skills Celebration - Prior to the Thanksgiving break, Mrs. Blake's ELA classes concluded their "Fall into Language" Unit with a Starbucks Cafe celebration. The classroom was turned into a Starbucks for the day, and students enjoyed hot apple cider and fall cookies. They also had the opportunity to decorate a "cup of thanks" for someone special to them.

Student Council Elves Decorate Officer Stephens' Door - Several student council “elves” have been busy decorating our new school resource officer's door.  7th grade student council members wanted to welcome Officer Stephens into our school community, so they took time out of their busy day to work on his office door.  Little known fact:  Officer Stephens is a "sneakerhead!"  The elves are currently working to make his office feel more homey - so more photos to follow.

Baking in FACS - The 7th and 8th grade students have been busy baking in the Family and Consumer Science Classroom.  Students prepared chocolate chip cookies, corn muffins, banana muffins and blueberry muffins this week.  These types of hands-on activities allow students to practice many life skills.  Students practiced using correct kitchen utensils, how to measure ingredients properly, keeping a safe and clean kitchen, washing dishes and doing laundry.

8th Grade Math PBIS - In Ms. Lukas' classes, the students have been earning raffle tickets since the start of the second nine weeks for appropriate behavior, helping others, and completing assignments in math class. Today (Friday, December 1) was the first raffle drawing; winners are in the picture below.

Paper Roller Coasters - The 7th grade STEM classes finished their paper roller coasters (PRC) and are calculating the speed at which the marble rolls, among other activities.  Mrs. Phillips is very proud of the effort that the students put into their projects.  They turned out fantastic and, better yet, none collapsed!  Excellent building skills, STEM students!  Although we would like to have included a photo of each PRC, space prohibits it.  Mrs. Phillips would like to thank Evan Delbene, Scott Ertman, and Dan Marchlewski for the photo of their PRC.

2nd Quarter Deficiencies - Students that have a “D” or “E” in a class at the midpoint of the second quarter will receive a deficiency in Skyward.  This information will be posted at the close of the school day on December 5.  The goal of this is to inform parents and provide time to work with the teacher to devise a plan for success throughout the remainder of the quarter.  Please contact your child’s teacher or school counselor if there are any questions.

Please take a moment to watch the video below.

As part of the cultural experience at each station, students will have the opportunity to sample fried rice, quesadillas, and crepes. In an effort to keep every child safe, please fill out this survey if you are concerned about your son/daughter's food sensitivities and do not want him/her to sample items offered.

Please fill out one form for each of your children who will participate in the event. Please respond by 11/15 (Wednesday).

Veterans Day - KAIS students were highly encouraged to acknowledge a veteran (family member, neighbor, family friend) in their Social Studies classes by completing the "Recognizing an American Hero" slide. These slides were printed out and displayed, creating a hero hallway, during the week of November 6-10.

Fallen Soldier Table (Veterans Day) - Tessa Welshans, one of our 7th grade World Geography students, went to Panera Bread a few days ago and there was a Fallen Soldiers Table.  She loved the idea and asked if KAIS would like to present their own version.  The Fallen Soldier Table is meant to remind viewers of those fallen, missing, or imprisoned U.S. Military Service Members. Each item on the Fallen (or Missing) Soldier Table represents the emotions and feelings reserved for those who did not come home. This table is in addition to the Recognizing an American Hero Hallway showcased in the Social Studies Hallway.

Students are using a program called EduTyping which allows them to work through basic keyboarding skills in small chunks, allowing them to build their muscle memory. Throughout this week, the primary focus was on the Home Row Keys, giving students a foundation to build on for lessons in the future. Looking at the students’ results, Mr. Skwarko is confident that everyone has mastered this necessary starting skill. Be sure to ask your student to show you what they learned!

Tower of Cups- STEM classes completed a team building activity called the Tower of Cups. In groups of 3, students were given string, a rubber band, and 6 cups. They were asked to build the cups in to a pyramid by only touching the string. Try it yourself! It requires excellent problem solving and communication skills.

New Student Welcome Groups- The school counselors welcomed 22 new students to our school district in grades 7 and 8 by hosting new student welcome groups. Activities included getting to know you games and building-wide scavenger hunts.
